Welcoming Ramadan with Language: A Collaboration between Meimei Course and International Students of UM Kendari
Kendari, February 28, 2026 — In welcoming the holy month of Ramadan, Meimei Course collaborated with international students of Muhammadiyah University (UM) Kendari to organize an event titled “Welcoming Ramadan with Language.” This activity served as a platform for cross-cultural exchange and strengthening connections among students from diverse backgrounds through language.
The event featured several international students who shared their motivations for learning Bahasa Indonesia. Among them were Li Siyu from China, Barako Galgallo from Kenya, Emmanuel from Rwanda, Viraya from Thailand, and Dennis from Kenya. In this session, the speakers highlighted that learning a language is not only about mastering vocabulary and grammar, but also about understanding culture, building relationships, and supporting their academic and daily life in Indonesia.
In addition, the event included a session where participants shared their experiences of observing Ramadan in Kendari. Aisha from Tanzania, Yazan from Palestine, and Marwan from Pakistan shared their stories of practicing Ramadan in a different cultural environment. They expressed that despite cultural differences, the sense of community and tolerance in Kendari made them feel welcomed and at home.
The event was conducted with great enthusiasm and warmth. Participants gained new insights into language and culture while also experiencing a strong sense of togetherness in welcoming Ramadan. This activity is expected to foster values of tolerance, diversity, and the importance of language as a tool for global communication.
